Where There's Smoke, by Smokey Robinson, released in 1979, marked a significant shift toward a funkier, disco-influenced sound, reflecting the evolving musical landscape of the late 1970s. The album, his first solo project after leaving The Miracles, showcased Robinson's smooth vocals and songwriting prowess, blending soul with contemporary dance grooves. It achieved commercial success, peaking at No. 17 on the Billboard R&B Albums chart, and was historically notable as Robinson's attempt to stay relevant in the disco era while maintaining his signature romantic lyricism. The hit single Cruisin' became a standout, reaching No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and remaining one of Robinson's most enduring songs. Another notable track, Get Ready, also gained traction, further highlighting his ability to adapt classic Motown vibes to a modern audience.
